German firearms manufacturer based in Suhl, Thuringia, founded in 1898. Produces premium over/under shotguns, side-by-side shotguns, double rifles, and Drilling combination guns. Merkel is the surviving prestige German firearms brand from the Suhl gunmaking tradition, which survived both World Wars and the DDR era largely intact. The Merkel 140 double rifle is a benchmark in the African hunting market. Known for the distinctive Kersten lock and robust double rifle actions.
