Remington Rand Inc. was an American business machinery company (typewriters, early computers) that was contracted by the US government to manufacture M1911A1 pistols during World War II. Between 1942 and 1945, Remington Rand produced approximately 1,086,624 M1911A1 pistols — more than any other WWII contractor, including Colt. The company had no prior firearms manufacturing experience; the contract was awarded to increase industrial production capacity. Remington Rand pistols are among the most commonly encountered WWII-era 1911s in collector circles.
