Underwood Typewriter Company was an American typewriter manufacturer that received a WWII government contract to produce M1 Carbines. Between 1942 and 1944, Underwood produced approximately 545,616 M1 Carbines at their Hartford, Connecticut facility. Like other non-firearms contractors (IBM, Rock-Ola), Underwood had to retool their manufacturing lines entirely for firearms production. Underwood-marked M1 Carbines are among the more collectible WWII carbine variants.
