Introduced by Winchester in 1895 for the Model 1894 lever-action rifle. An early smokeless powder sporting cartridge designed to replace black powder offerings of the era. Never as popular as .30-30 Winchester, it was eventually discontinued as centerfire cartridge selection narrowed.
