History
Smith & Wesson and Remington introduced this magnum revolver cartridge in 1964, designed to fill the gap between .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Initially conceived as a police cartridge with better terminal performance than .357 Mag but less recoil than .44 Mag. Never achieved the market penetration S&W hoped for; overshadowed by .357 and .44 Magnum.
